Do you have a sleep rebelling toddler or preschool Do you have a sleep rebelling toddler or preschooler? This might be why.... 😴👶🏼🧒🏼
Bedtime is too early (for them, or the situation) ⏰😴
As your child gets older, they will sloooooowly start to need less sleep. So it is possible that they need to spend more awake time, so they can get their energy and sillies out before feeling tired enough to fall into sleep - especially if they are napping! 🕒⚡
Their nap! 😴🌙
Naps that run too late, or too long can take away some of the tiredness needed to fall asleep at bedtime. This isn't a bad thing per se, but it may mean your child isn't ready for sleep when you might want them to be. Experiment and see what works best! ⏰⏰
Need for connection ❤️🤗
The demands of everyday life can sometimes make it hard for littles to get their love cup filled. The naturally slowed pace of bedtime makes it easy for your child to reconnect with you after a busy day. It's no wonder they don't want that precious time to end! 🌛💖
Stress 😰🤯
We all encounter little stressors that add up during the day that can put us into a stressed (also called dysregulated) state. Some littles are more sensitive to this than others. Your child might need a little extra help to wind down before being expected to fall asleep. 🛀💆‍♂️
Dread 😟🛌
Do you ever dread bedtime? It's entirely possible that your child feels the same way! Especially if bedtime has been a stressful time lately. This could be because you've been making changes, or simply because they don't wish to separate from you. 🌙💔
If you are encountering any (or all!) of these, you can relax knowing that this is all really normal.. Not that it makes it any easier! 😅💤
Leave a comment and let me know if you can relate to any of these with your toddler or preschooler.

Bedtime struggles? Find out why rewards are NOT th Bedtime struggles? Find out why rewards are NOT the answer! 🌙😫
Picture this: your child takes forever to fall asleep, can't settle, wiggles, gets out of bed, and bombards you with endless requests at bedtime. It's exhausting, right?
You've probably heard that using rewards like sticker charts, or small toys can encourage more cooperation at bedtime. 🌟🏆
Rewards are one of the most recommended strategies out there! 🙌
But do they really work? 🤔
Here's the truth:
Motivating a child through rewards only works when your child’s brain is developmentally capable of holding TWO thoughts at the same time.
Example: “I don’t want to go to bed” AND “I want the reward” 🧠💭
This developmental milestone happens for most kids between the age of 5-7 🧒🎉
Until that time, whatever thought they want MORE (in that moment) will be the thought that pushes through.
Rewards can be enticing! I mean, what kid doesn’t want a new toy? So this thought may be the one that pushes through?? 🎁😄
But eventually, the excitement will wear off, and they’ll stop caring about the reward.. 😕🛌
And you’ll be back spending hours doing bedtime!! ⏰😩
Why? Because rewards don't solve the underlying reasons why your little one keeps getting out of bed or struggles to fall asleep in the first place! ❌🚫
They might work temporarily, but they're just like band-aids—they don't stick forever. 🩹🚫
So, let's say goodbye to bribing with reward charts. There’s just no point. 👋😔
Feeling unsure what to try next or just done with bedtime dread?

Do you ever worry that your toddler or preschooler Do you ever worry that your toddler or preschooler is not getting enough sleep? 😴
It’s hard not to! Sleep is important for optimal development, right? 🌙💤
So what is normal? And, how much sleep does your child need? 🤔
The National Sleep Foundation gives guidelines on recommended 24-hour sleep totals (so naps and overnight combined)...
That range is…
😴 Toddlers (1-2) from 11 to 13 hours
😴 Preschoolers (3-5) from 10 to 13 hours
😴 School Age (6 to 13) from 9 to 11 hours
BUT The foundation goes further and provides a larger range that may be appropriate, but these numbers are rarely quoted (despite being quite common!) 😮
That range is...
😴 Toddlers from 9 to 16 hours
😴 Preschoolers 8 to 14 hours
😴 School Age 7 to 12 hours
So, with such a large range, how do you know if YOUR child is getting enough sleep? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️
It’s actually really simple… Just ask yourself these 3 questions:
1️⃣ Do your child’s 24-hour sleep totals fall within the “normal” or “appropriate” range
2️⃣ Do they wake up spontaneously in the morning, on most days? AND
3️⃣ Are they are generally happy, and growing, and learning and all that wonderful toddler amazingness?
If you answered YES to all 3, then they are probably doing just fine.
Honestly, it’s rare that I encounter a child who is truly sleep deprived! 😄❤️

You might not know this, but spending quality time with your child during the day can actually help speed up bedtime..
It's true! Helping to fill their up their love tank can increase cooperation and reduce attention seeking behaviours making the whole bedtime routine run quicker and smoother.
My favourite way to do this, is with something called "Special Time"
This is where you take 10 minutes out of your busy evening and drop your agenda. Let the dishes sit, turn the TV off, and spend some time intentionally delighting in your child.
Laugh, play and be silly!

But - Instead of getting sucked into the "should's of society," I want to help you to take a quick step back and dig deeper to see what may be happening developmentally from your child’s perspective
From their point of view, the night is so looooong. And, you feel so much more safe and reassuring to them than a dark, lonely bedroom.
They likely also have some pent up excitement, frustration or other big feelings left over from the day saved up in their emotional backpack.
These are the two biggest why kids hang onto you, and prevent you from leaving after saying the dreaded ‘good night’.
So what can you do about it?
1️⃣ Focus on the next time you’ll be together instead of on the separation. You could place a book under their pillow and say you’ll read it together in the morning
2️⃣ Spend some time doing some big body play before bedtime. Play hide-and-seek, wrestling, dance party before calming down for bedtime.
3️⃣ Help your child hold you in their thoughts. Focus on how you will still be together ‘here is a kiss on your hand to last the whole night’, ‘ I’ll come and check on you when you are asleep’
